Liminal Spaces

I really like these photos I took all over Chicago at different times, but had difficulty finding a way to share them in an interesting context. So I was very pleased when I finally figured out how to group them together under this unified theme. Enjoy!

Topsail Hill Preserve State Park

We’ve visited Topsail State Park many times, including glorious beach days, relaxing afternoon walks, and we once even rented a campsite to have a bonfire and toast marshmallows. August is usually not the best time for a long walk, but it was cloudy and not too hot, so we decided to go for it.

I was excited to see so many cacti, and little white beach morning glories growing out of the sand. Next time we’ll have to rent kayaks and paddle around Campbell Lake.

Photos taken with my Kodak PIXPRO FZ55.

Garden of Eden

This collage has a Garden of Eden vibe with the Adam and Eve ceramic bowl. I also included a portion of the painting Young Corn by Grant Wood because I felt like it fit the theme.

All photos taken by me.

Seaside

One of the cool things about Seaside that really distinguishes it from other communities along 30A is its town square. It has a little grocery store, book store, record shop, art galleries, boutiques, eclectic home goods, and a row of vintage Airstreams selling an assortment of beach eats.

From the biggest mansion to the smallest cottage, all the homes in Seaside are tied together by pastel coastal colors and white picket fences. The town is also criss-crossed by attractive footpaths and adjacent to WaterColor’s nature trails, making it extra walkable.

Technically this yellow house facing the Gulf of America is in WaterColor, but it’s right on the boundary with Seaside so I’m including it here. The two communities are seamlessly connected, and sometimes the only clue that you’ve crossed over from one to the other are the different street lamps.

Seaside is also well-known for its unique beach pavilions. Here from left to right you can see the Odessa, Pensacola, and Coleman Pavilions. Unless you are a resident or guest beach access can be tricky, but of course the exclusivity is part of the draw.

This is Natchez Beach Pavilion.

Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach are also beautiful with their own unique shops, restaurants, and architecture. But if I had to pick a favorite town along 30A, it would be Seaside.

I would also be remiss to not mention that most of The Truman Show was filmed here.

Summer Snapshots

Almost all my photos are taken with an iPhone camera, but I have been mixing it up lately with my new digital camera. These three photos were taken on a recent vacation with my Kodak PIXPRO FZ55, and no filters have been applied. The first two were taken in downtown Port St. Joe, and the third one in Cape San Blas.

I can’t put my finger on it, but they just have a different vibe than iPhone photos. Part of me wants to switch over permanently, but I’m not ready yet. For now I’ll continue taking pictures with both. Hope you enjoyed these.
